Safety and prequalification

A 40,000 psi jet will cut concrete, and it does not distinguish. Everything below exists because of that one fact.

Controlling the jet

The hazard with ultra-high-pressure water is not noise or dust. It is a stream that penetrates without the operator feeling resistance, and an injection injury that looks minor and is not. Every control we run starts from treating the lance as a cutting tool rather than a hose.

  • Exclusion zones set from the working pressure and the nozzle, marked and held, with a dedicated spotter where a zone crosses a live area.
  • Dump-to-atmosphere control on the gun, so releasing the trigger releases the pressure.
  • Operators trained and assessed on the specific plant they are using, with the records to show it.
  • Hoses, guns, fittings and pressure vessels on a test and inspection register that travels with the unit.
  • A medical card carried on site that tells an emergency department what a water injection injury is, because most have not seen one.

On your site, under your rules

Most of our work happens inside somebody else's permit system, on an asset that is either live or about to be. That is the part that gets a shutdown finished on time or does not.

  • Inductions, permits to work, isolations and confined space entry handled through your system, not around it.
  • Confined space trained operators for manual tank and vessel entry, and automated heads used wherever entry can be avoided entirely.
  • Road and airside work runs to the traffic management plan, at night where the plan says night.
  • Water is contained, collected and treated on site. Spoil and slurry leave with the vacuum loader rather than waiting for a second contractor.
  • Discharge and consent conditions are agreed with the asset owner before a hose goes out.

We've used Aquamax for 15 years on our annual shuts. I continue to be impressed with their project planning, health and safety management and the quality work delivered for us.

Prequalification

We are prequalified with the contractors and asset owners on our client list, and the pack goes out the day it is asked for. If your procurement team needs something that is not in it, ask and we will tell you whether we hold it rather than say yes and find out later.

What the pack contains

  • Health and safety policy and management plan
  • Site-specific job safety analysis for the scope you are letting
  • Operator competency and confined space entry records
  • Plant register with test and inspection dates
  • Public liability and statutory liability certificates of currency
  • Traffic management plan where the work touches a carriageway
  • Environmental method statement for containment, collection and discharge
